What does not kill you, mutates, and tries again? This saying is synonymous with the CORONAvirus, which despite researchers' and scientists' best efforts to find a cure and vaccines, the virus seems resilient with its hold on contemporary human civilization. The Mu variant or B.1.621 is a COVID-19 variant recently included as a variant of interest in the World Health Organization. According to a WHO spokesperson, the variant contains constellations of mutations indicating the potential of vaccine resistance.

As is the case with the Beta variant first identified in South Africa, the Mu variant also portrays the properties of having an immune escape. The variant first emerged in Columbia, and reports of the variant outbreak have been received from Europe as well as South America. Variants such as the Delta variant dominant in the UK and first seen in India have been shown to weaken the efficacy of vaccines.

Mu, scientifically called B.1.621 fitting with WHO's Greek alphabet labeling system, is the fifth strain of the Coronavirus to enter the organization's list of 'variants of interest'. According to WHO, four other variants are of interest and these are; the Alpha variant, first recorded in Kent first, the Beta variant, seen in South Africa, the Gamma variant first recorded in Brazil, and the Delta variant first recorded in South Africa. The new variant increases concern as the highly infectious Delta variant ravages across the globe.
