JOBS: Interview Etiquette

Interview etiquette is one of the most important things that you need to be cautious of when attending an interview. Interview etiquette is best described as the behavior or language that you display during an interview.

JOBS: Interview Etiquette

On most occasions, interview etiquette is monitored more than the physical papers that you present to your employer when going for an interview. When going for an interview, you should know that your interview etiquette begins the moment you step foot into an organization's environment.

Starting with the guards at the gate, how you interact with them might contribute to you being able to secure a job position in the company as most employers might follow up on your every step. Always treat everyone you meet with respect.

This applies to all aspects of life, and it is especially true in the context of a job interview. Make a conscious effort to be respectful from the moment you leave your house on the day of the interview. Be mindful of how you act on the way to work or in an elevator—no one gets points for cutting off the CEO in the parking lot or failing to hold the door open for the hiring manager.

Consider how you will treat everyone in the office with respect and present yourself well ahead of time. Security guards, receptionists, and anyone else you meet on your way to the interview room may be asked to give you feedback.

As part of having etiquette, it is best if you practice using particular words such as 'please', 'kindly', 'excuse me', 'pardon', and 'thank you' among other words.

These words might seem small but in the real sense, they display a type of character that you have. Body language is also part of your etiquette, especially the verbal communication that you show during an interview.

An interviewer will be able to know your status at the moment just by looking closely at your verbal language. Sometimes you might say something but your body language portrays a different kind of message.

As you wait for your interviewer in the room, ensure that you sit with your back straight and shoulders open. Hands can be placed on your lap or the armrests. The feet should be flat on the ground or crossed at the ankles. Avoid using your phone so that you can maintain open body language and focus on being present.

During an interview when asked a question, always ensure that you make eye contact. This eye contact does not have to be constant or intense. Use it strategically to show that you're paying attention or to emphasize an important point. You want to show the interviewer that you are completely focused on them and in the present moment.

Interview etiquette is very essential and you should be cautious with it since it has a higher chance of helping you to secure the job position of your dream.

Here are some jobs in Kenya that you can apply for.
