According to police, at least 10 people have committed suicide over the weekend across the country with up to two cases being reported each day.

On July 31, a man was discovered in his home following a suicide attempt in Shauri Moyo while in Kieni, Nyeri a middle-aged woman hanged herself.

On July 30, another body was discovered hanging from a tree in the Kikuyu district of Kiambu County. The body was discovered on a tree on Saturday afternoon, according to the police, by a team that was monitoring the Acre Tano neighborhood.

In Migori, a man’s body was discovered hanging in his home in Migori following what was likely a suicide.

In Kayole, Nairobi, a 27-year-old man reportedly died after falling from the fourth story of his residence. Police were informed by neighbors that the man dropped down the building's rails and hit the ground and died on the spot.

According to the police, they were informed that an 85-year-old woman committed suicide in her home in Kiratina, Kiambu. The family told the police she lived alone and had mental health issues.

According to the police, a middle-aged male died by hanging himself at his home in Kakamega's Eregi neighborhood, and a pregnant 21-year-old woman also committed suicide in her Matungu home.

In Nzambani, Seku, Kitui County, a medical student allegedly committed himself by hanging himself in his chamber.

A 39-year-old man’s body was also discovered in the Sultan Hamud district of Makueni County hanging from a tree.

According to police, the bodies were transferred to the local morgues in preparation for a postmortem examination.

Authorities attribute the upward increase in suicide cases this year to mental suffering.

2019 saw 499 cases handled by the police, and 2020 saw 575. There are reports of at least 313 suicides between January and July 2021.

Police reports indicate that men made up the majority of the victims.
