Yesterday the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) released 13 names of the people seeking to succeed the office of the Chief Justice.

Kenyans were got at a surprise after some of the prominent people expected to apply for the position didn’t e.g. the Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu and lawyer Makau Mutua did not submit their applications.

The candidates include, Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia, Former DPP Philip Murgor, University of Nairobi law scholar Professor Patricia Kameri Mbote, High Court Judges Njagi Marete, Matthew Nduma and Said Juma Chitembwe, Court of Appeal Judges Martha Koome and William Ouko.

Others include former commissioner with CKRC Alice Jepkoech, Professor Otinga Mare, Sports medical doctor Dr. Moni Wekesa and lawyers Otondi Ontweka & Ombongi Brian.

Surprisingly, no Supreme Court judge applied for the Chief Justice position.

JSC secretary Anne Amadi said they are going to uphold professionalism and integrity throughout the nomination process. 

“The Commission will proceed to shortlist and publicize the list within 14 days as provided in the First Schedule of the Judicial Service Act,” said Amadi.

The application process closed on Tuesday evening, therefore, setting a motion to find Maraga’s successor.
