The deceased woman was later identified as businesswoman Janet Wangui Waiyaki who was in the company of her nephew Bernard Chege, who also sustained injuries during the 10 am incident

According to eyewitnesses, the car had been parked for close to one hour at the scene prompting the police officers to open fire on suspicion its occupants could be up to no good.

The then Nairobi County police commander Joseph Ole Tito claimed the officers first approached the car intending to establish the mission of its occupants.

The driver attempted to drive off, but his car swerved off the road before making a stop a few meters from the scene.

However on Tuesday, May 11, High Court Judge Stella Mutuku found the two police officers guilty of manslaughter and blamed them for using extreme force despite the victims posing no danger.

The two convicts now have two weeks to appeal the high court sentence.
