At least 20 people have been confirmed dead at a clandestine cockfighting ring in Mexico.

Mexican president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, termed the incidence as a massacre that involved rival criminal gangs.

The attack happened on Sunday night in the town of Las Tinajas in Michoacan, a western state plunged into violence by turf wars between rival drug cartels.

Also, according to report by the Attorney General’s office, the lifeless bodies of 16 men and three women were found at the crime scene with all of them bearing gunshot wounds.

According to the president Lopez Obrador, the perpetrators attacked and shot those in attendance hence many deaths being reported.

 " the perpetrators came and shot the attendees and unfortunately there were many deaths,” said the president.

Since 2006, Mexico has been involved in cartel related bloodshed at a time when the government was launching a controversial anti-drug operation with federal troops.

Since the start of the violence, over 340,000 lives have been lost. Majority of the deaths reported were from organized crime cases.

Michoacán, where the Sunday attack took place, is one of Mexico’s state that is associated with violence.

The state has powerful drug trafficking gangs that include, Los Viagras and the Jalisco New Generation with both of them competing for the control of the territory.

In the last one month, an armed attack in Michoacán was reported to have killed up to 17 people which was termed by authorities as a revenge of one of the cells of the Jalisco New Generation cartel against another cell.

The government was unable to confirm the exact number of deaths since no bodies were found.

The violence in the state also targets avocado growers in the region and the state is the leading avocado grower in the region.

The violence in Michoacan also includes kidnappings and extortion targeting avocado producers.

Also, according to reports the Mayor of the Michoacan Municipality, Cesar Valencia, was shot dead in march.
