A total of 300 litres of illicit brews were seized and destroyed yesterday at the Cheplanget location, Bureti Subcounty in Kericho county, during a crackdown to eradicate the selling and distribution of brews in the area.

Led by Cheplanget Location chief  Elijah Arap Sigei and assistant chiefs, the crackdown began a few weeks ago and so far has visited homesteads that are suspected to be selling the illicit brews, and the operation will cut across the neighboring villages that could be involved in supplying the brews.

“We have seized 300 litres from this homestead; the members of the public are here to witness our relentless efforts. We are destroying these brews in public to serve as a warning to those suspected of engaging in these illegal activities. Brewers are warned, and this operation will go on as planned. Should you be found culpable, you will face the law to explain why you have defied government orders,’’ said Sigei.

The chiefs decried the acts by illicit brewers as a cause of the rise in insecurity and lamented that the brews could destroy the lives of the children who are currently on holiday.

The senior assistant chief of the Butiik sublocation also cautioned the villagers against taking advantage of the ongoing passage ceremonies to brew the illicit liquor.
