A Woman In Mombasa Kidnapped Over Ksh25,000 Microfinance Loan.

A 35-year-old lady in Mombasa County’s Likoni sub-county is pleading for justice after she was kidnapped by Fadhili Microfinance Enterprise employees for failing to repay a Ksh25, 000 loan.

Joyce Njoki reports that she was brought to Inuka Police Station by personnel from the microfinance institution.

Officers at the station, however, urged the authorities to file a civil complaint instead of pursuing criminal charges against her.

"When we returned to the station to draft an agreement, I was locked up in one of the office's rooms and left there all night." They assured me that if I paid the money, they would free me. "I immediately dialed 999, and thankfully, cops answered and came to my aid the next day," she explained.

She also admitted to defaulting on the debt owing of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a negative impact on her business.

"I had managed to return a significant portion of my loan, but owing to late payments, I was slammed with further arrears, and that is how I ended myself in debt with the financial institution," she explained.

Njoki now alleges that her life is in danger as a result of her kidnapping incident, claiming that no one has been detained in relation with her kidnapping despite her filing an OB number 02/22/03/2020.

"I reported the issue to the Likoni police station, but no one has been arrested despite threats to kidnap me again unless I repay the loan," she claimed.

Rehema Nzai, the director of the Fadhili Micro Enterprise, declined to take calls..

Peter Karanja, the Likoni sub-county police chief, said he was unaware of the incident since he was away.

"I'm not aware of that particular situation," he replied, "but I'll look into it to see how far the investigation has progressed."
