Win for Azimio la Umoja party as one of its Candidates in the Mombasa Gubernatorial race  Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir was  On Tuesday, August 30, named the next governor of Mombasa County.

Abdulswamad garnered 119,082 votes, flooring the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Hassan Omar Hassan who got 98,180 votes.

He won the election alongside Francis Thoya, his running companion, and will take over from departing manager Hassan Ali Joho, who served two mandates starting in 2013.

At the county tallying center, the candidate was given his certificate by Mombasa County Returning Officer Swalah Yusuf of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In addition, the race attracted independent Daniel Kitsao, Hezron Awiti, a former Nyali MP, and outgoing Mombasa Deputy Governor William Kingi of the PAA.

According to official statistics provided by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries, Commission Sahrrif won even as the election saw a low voter turnout in a county with 641,913 registered voters.

The newly elected county governor has experience in politics. He was first elected in 2013 and currently serves as the MP for the Mvita seat.

He served on the Public Investments Committee and the Departmental Committee on Finance, Planning, and Trade in the National Assembly.
