Advocate Julie`s Presentation Temporarily Disrupts Court's Proceedings

After mentioning an affidavit submitted by Commissioner Irene Masit, Soweto's presentation briefly interrupted the Court's business, drawing the attention of Senior Counsels Githu Muigai and Paul Muite.

Following an altercation between the two attorneys, Chief Justice Martha Koome stepped in and asked Soweto, a member of Raila Odinga's legal team, to identify the document she was referring to in her arguments.

"That issue can be put to rest very simply. The affidavit I refer to by Irene Masit is drawn and filed by MS Ouma J and Associates Advocates. I believe that each of the commissioners had the right to and did appoint their own advocates in response to the petition," Soweto put the matter to rest capturing the attention of the entire nation.

It is simpler to comprehend why her career has always been on the upward thanks to her flawless and succinct delivery.

Defending Azimio La Umoja Candidate Raila Odinga at the supreme court of Kenya Soweto stated that the cancelation of Elections in Odinga`s strongholds affected the voter turnout.

"The elections were canceled only in the strongholds of the 1st petitioner, therefore as the election started the 1st petitioner didn't start equally with the 1st respondent…The cancellation of the vote in those areas suppressed the voter turnout". She noted.

Advocate Soweto`s Journey

She was one of a flurry of female attorneys who made an impact at the Supreme Court in 2017 amid yet another petition regarding the Presidential election.

She was collaborating with attorney Harun Ndubi at the time to defend Njonjo Mue and Khelef Khalifa, two activists.

Soweto is collaborating with James Orengo on this year's petition; Orengo's law company, JAB Orengo Advocates, helped Soweto break into Nairobi's competitive legal market.

The attorney, who joined the practice in 2003, has advanced through the ranks and now runs her own business, Soweto & Company Advocates.

She began her career as an intern at the South African Human Rights Commission before moving on to the University of Pretoria's Centre for Human Rights, where she worked as a researcher and tutor.
