Algeria out, Nigeria in to Host African Athletics Championships

Nigeria will now host the 21st African Athletics Championships proposed to be held in Lagos on June 23-27 after a long discussions between the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and the country’s Ministry of Youth and Development.

"Nigeria is poised to host the championships in the megacity of Lagos from June 23-27 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium with auxiliary support to be provided at the National Stadium, Surulere and the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba both in Lagos," the ministry and the confederation stated  in a joint statement.

This comes after Algeria who was the initial hosts pulled out due to the rising cases of coronavirus infections.

The two parties agreed in working together to deliver their best despite the unavoidable challenges.

"Issues relating to the hosting of the championships were fully deliberated upon and modalities for a successful hosting of the championships were carefully mapped out. We are fully committed and working in synergy towards the delivery of a world-class championships," the parties stated.

Comprehensive details on the tournament is set to be released later in the coming days on the event specifications that resulted to that led to its postponing from last year.
