The 21-year-old Nairobi man,  Alvin Chivondo, is being held at the Central Police Station and will be charged once the police have completed their investigation after he was arrested on Ronald Ngala Street in Naivas Supermarket.

In April 2022, Alvin was caught stealing in Naivas supermarket and this infuriated many Kenyans in which he was to be sentenced to one year for stealing food.

Chivondo was released in April after Ex-Nairobi governor, Mike Sonko paid KSh 100,000 bail and offered him work after the man's plight went viral.

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko saved Alvin from prison after he pleaded guilty to shoplifting, and he is now in police custody for committing a similar offense.

Alvin Chivondo, now suspected of being a serial shoplifter, was arrested on Thursday after attempting to steal maize flour from a supermarket on Ronald Ngala Street in Nairobi CBD.

He is now being held at the Central Police Station pending arraignment.

This comes just weeks after Milimani Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo sentenced him to a year in prison or an Sh100,000 fine.

He received the sentence after pleading guilty to stealing 5 kgs of rice, 5 litres of cooking oil, 2 kgs of sugar, and tea leaves worth Ksh3,165.

 Sonko explained that he made the decision as part of his routine of reaching out to troubled people.

"Many Kenyans are living in squalor due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many will say that it’s PR but I like assisting people, that’s has been my passion since I was in high school in Kwale boys," Sonko stated.

Chivondo is currently being held at the station, according to Central Police Commander David Baariu, and maybe arraigned on stealing charges.
