An Innovation and Youth Empowerment Center will be launched next week in Hola, Tana River, a second one of the kind in the country after the Isiolo center.

There are many activities to take place in the center, plans to develop them are underway, the launch will be the start of more developments in the area.

According to Education Executive Abbas Kunyo, the 1000 acre center will be home to a thousand boarding students and 125 teachers who will live in the campus quarters.

“We intend to have students from the entire region, including the northern frontier. This will be an academic and talent center where everybody has an opportunity to learn and sharpen their skills in various arts of sports, music, and science,” said the Education Executive.

Other facilities in the innovation center will include a fully equipped ICT facility, a media facility, hydroponic farms, and fish ponds to support technological innovations.

There are plans for a 500-bed capacity hotel for food processing, practical, and other dealings to boost the catering sector.

Mr. Kunyo said the youth will be trained on value addition for the international market after establishing a fruit processing section.

“We have already established partnerships with various organizations in Germany. The official stated that there is a market for dried mango fruits that are turned into snacks, and we are determined to explore it,” he stated.

Huawei is among the companies interested in facilitating the center with the IT hub. The hydroponic farm established by the United Nations Development Programme is ready for students to start working with from this week.

The county administration has also partnered with the Kenya School of Government to offer the students various fields.

“We want to have a pool of trained and skilled experts in farming, sports, mechanics, and other critical sectors that help ease our daily lives,”  he added.
