BREAKING: Former South African President Jacob Zuma Sentenced 15 Months in Jail

South African Constitutional Court has sentenced former president Jacob Zuma to 15 months in prison, Deputy Chief Justice Sisi Khampepe says in a ruling in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

BREAKING: Former South African President Jacob Zuma Sentenced 15 Months in Jail

Zuma was convicted of contempt of court after defying an order to testify before a judicial panel investigating corruption during his nine-year rule.

Former President Zuma has been ordered to submit himself to the Nkanda police station within five days of this ruling so that he can begin his sentence.

If he fails to do so, Minister Bheki Cele must take all the necessary steps to ensure that Zuma is delivered in prison.

The court ruling offers a mixed blessing for President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has made the fight against graft a top priority. While Zuma’s incarceration will silence one of his biggest detractors and demonstrate his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, it could also widen divisions within the ruling party and alienate its supporters in the former president’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal.
