CAF Champions League: How teams cruised to the semi finals.

Wydad Casablanca, Kaizer Chiefs, Al Ahly and Esperance are this season’s semi finalists after winning their respective games in the quarter finals played on Saturday.

This is how these teams booked their places in the last four.

(1) Wydad Casablanca.

Morocco giants proceeded to the semi finals after overcoming MC Alger 1- 0 in a quarter final return leg match played in Casablanca. The solitary goal of the match helped Wydad to move forward despite of their first draw of 1-1 in Algeria last weekend.

The late goal from midfielder Walid El Karti after an assist from Mohamed Ounajem in the second minute of the added time in second half sealed their fate in the semi finals.

In the first leg match at Stade 5 Juliet Stadium, Yahya Jabrane scored the opening goal for Wydad in the 66th minute through a penalty but they were denied a win when defender Miloud Rabial equalised in the 83rd minute to end the game with a 1-1 draw as it moved to the second leg.

They wil meet Kaizer Chiefs in the semi finals having been put together in group C at group stage of the competition. Wydad defeated Chiefs at home 4-0 but Amakhosi fought back in Johannesburg by winning narrowly in a result of 1-0.

(2) Esperance.

 The Tunisian giants advanced to the semi finals after emerging the winners against CR Belouizdad of Algeria in a match that was decided through penalties.

The match which was played in Rades saw Esperance win 2-0 at normal time but the aggregate result was 2-2 because Belouizdad won the first leg match with the same score. Midfielders Adelrauf Benguit and Mohamed Ben scored for the host to send the match to penalties. The eleventh time semi finalist will face Al Ahly of Egypt in the semi finals.

(3) Kaizer Chiefs.

South African side progressed to the semi finals when they qualified through aggregate result of 4-3 even after being beaten by Simba SC from Tanzania by 3-0 in their second leg encounter in Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Dar es Salaam on Saturday. Their 4-0 victory at home in their first leg match last weekend helped them secure semi final slot.

They are now into their first CAF Champions League semi final. Coach Gavin Hunt was elated after the feat.

“We’ve made history. It was very difficult today but we’re through,” said Hunt.

(4) Al Ahly.

The defending champions booked their place in the last four after holding South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon.

The result boosted their reverse match 2-0 victory at home the previous weekend to 3-1 aggregate.

They are now heads high as they go to meet Esperance with coach Pitson Mosimane seeking a revenge from the 2018 Champions League final defeat in their last meeting.

The two-legged semi-finals are scheduled to be played on June 18/19 for the first leg while the second one to be played on June 25/26.

The final which will be hosted in Stade Mohamed V Stadium Casablanca, Morocco will be played on 17th July, 2021.
