A driver lost control of a car he was driving along the Meru-Nairobi route and got involved in an accident that led to the death of one and several others injured.

The car accident in Tharaka Nithi County occurred in the early morning hours, witnesses said the car went off the road.

The deceased's body was moved to the mortuary at Chuka General Hospital.

Road users have been reminded to drive carefully while traveling the congested road.

According to statistics released by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), from January 1 to June 20, 2022, the number of people who died from road accidents increased from 651 last year to 788.

“Pedestrian-related traffic fatalities have increased by 21 percent to 788 this year compared to those who died due to road crashes last year. This makes them the most vulnerable group of road users in the country,” reads the statistics.

Since January of this year, there have been about 2,211 road fatalities in Kenya, compared to 1,988 at about the same period in 2021.

Following pedestrians, around 608 motorcyclists perished in the same period this year as opposed to 569 in 2021, and 362 passengers perished in the same period as opposed to 326 in 2021.

The number of pillion passengers who have passed away has increased from 182 in 2021 to 211 as of now.

According to police, speeding is what caused the majority of the accidents.

The rise in crashes has also been linked to reckless driving, risky overtaking, intoxicated driving, drunk walking, drunk riding, and failure to wear a helmet, among other factors.
