As first days back go, the Champions League offered up its fair share of drama. A night that saw Ronaldo’s return for the red devils end in unexpected fashion, and Barcelona feeling the full might of their German opposition.

The much anticipated return of Christiano Ronaldo wasn’t entirely the storybook ending many had hoped it would be, as Manchester United faced off against Swiss minnows Young Boys. The game seemed to be going Manchester and Ronaldo’s way when the Portuguese star netted the match’s first goal in the 13th minute. The fairytale however, belonged to Young Boys on the night. Having managed to equalize in the 66th minute, the Swiss team, against all odds, then stunned the English giants with a last gasp 95th minute winner.

Things in Barcelona weren’t much better for Ronald Koeman and his men as they lined up against Bavarian juggernauts, Bayern Munich. The 33rd minute saw Bayern take the lead after a fortunate deflection off Barca defender Eric Garcia, giving Thomas Muller his first goal of the tournament. Things got worse for the Catalans as Bayern managed to successfully shut out any attacking threats and the ever looming threat of Robert Lawandowski finally broke through, as the Polish player netted himself two goals in the 56th and 85th minutes, respectively.

A goal-filled night in Europe saw the Champions League off to a great start. Here are how the other matches shaped up:
