Philip Chelule, location chief for Kipreres, claims that his body was discovered hanging from the roof of the residence where he had been living.

"The boy was staying with his grandmother. His parents parted ways some years back, his grandparents enrolled him to continue with his studies", the chief told the media.

The deceased, who was scheduled to take the KCPE this year, texted his uncles to let them know about his plans but apparently received no response.

Police arrived at the scene and found no suicide note.

The deceased's body was taken to the mortuary at Longisa Referral Hospital.

The body of a 20-year-old Mengwet Secondary student was discovered hanging inside a home in Solyot, Bomet county, early on Monday, August 30.

The parents of the form four student discovered him, and Solyot assistant chief Willy Kirui, who confirmed the occurrence, said that the student had written a note to his parents explaining that he had been struggling with depression.

A father killed his 12-year-old son in Laikipia county earlier this month before hanging himself from a rope.

The father, Joseph Mwangi Maina, left a three-page suicide note saying that he had killed himself and his Grade Four son as a result of an argument with his wife.

According to the Kenyan police, more persons are said to have committed suicide in the first six months of this year than in all of 2020.

The oldest suicide victim was 76 years old, and the youngest was nine. The Ministry of Health indicated that the 483 deaths noted over the period represented a significant rise over the 320 instances each year on average.

The Kenyan government has not provided any explanations for the surge, but according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report released in June: “Suicides happen impulsively in moments of crisis with a breakdown in the ability to deal with life stresses, such as financial problems, relationship breakup or chronic pain and illness.”

The report added that in 2019, “over 77% of global suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries”.
