In Utange, Mombasa County, one woman was detained on Friday after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) seized a huge consignment of cocaine with a street worth of around Ksh.100 million.

The DCI's Transnational Organized Crimes and Anti-Narcotics team responded to a tip that led them to a home where Nuru Murshid Mahfud, 29, was discovered in possession of the controlled substance, which was conveniently wrapped in 35 sachets and stashed in a suitcase.

Investigators are still trying to figure out whether the shipment was intended for local use or was being shipped to another country as some of the consignment had been packaged, and ready to sell.

The woman believed to be a mule was arrested during the operation and the police are on the hunt for her accomplices.

“The suspect has been detained at a police station in the coastal city as the undercover agents hunt for her accomplices,” the DCI stated.

The agency's Forensics Lab's Chemistry and Toxicology team will conduct forensic testing on the impounded narcotics for documentation.

In 2016, Kenyan security forces in Mombasa captured the second-largest cocaine haul in the country, weighing 100 kilograms and valued at Sh598 million. However, the matter was later rejected in court.

On Wednesday, April 13 2022, four infamous suspected drug traffickers were caught at the Likoni Ferry in Mombasa on while ferrying a substance suspected to be heroin.

 According to preliminary estimates, the 1.5 kilograms of heroin have a street worth of Sh3 million. Their final destination and origin remain unknown. Following intelligence gathered, investigators from the Transnational and Organized Crimes Unit apprehended them.
