Concern, as three visually impaired pupils, impregnated

A school for the visually impaired persons in Thika has felt the heat of defilement with three of its pupils pregnant. Records from the Thika School for the Blind shows that the three have been sent to their homes as they are almost ready to give birth.  What disturbs the school is that the defiler may never be found and brought to book.

This was revealed yesterday by the school’s headteacher Margaret Karera during celebrations to mark the Day of the African Child.

“This is disturbing since the girls can’t recognize their defilers given their disability. Their lives have been messed and will never get justice,” she said.

According to the Sub-county Children Officer Linah Mwangi, the three are part of six pupils in the Sub-county who are expectant.

All the girls are teenagers and the number may be higher as most of the cases go unreported.

One of the cases involved a 14-year-old girl who was defiled and impregnated by her grandfather in Thika’s Kiandutu slums. In the same estate, another girl was this month defiled by an unknown person while on her way to a shop.

“In most cases, the defilers are close relatives or family friends who take advantage of their situation,” she said.

She said in most cases, the defilers have been arrested and are facing defilement charges. She however raised concern that the cases rarely go far as the defilers are released on bond, and use their influence to buy their freedom.

Mwangi said visually impaired victims of defilement rarely get justice as the victims’ defence only relies on the suspect’s smell or voice.

“Defilement involving a visually impaired person is difficult to prove as they have to place the suspect at the crime scene. Not unless the suspect was caught red-handed, it is difficult to prove that they committed the crime,” she said.
