Police cells across Eldoret town in Uasin Gishu County have been hit by a crisis over an overflow of individuals arrested.

The situation has been occasioned by what is said to be a breakdown of the Eldoret Court's fine payment system.

According to some of the persons who have been in the police cells, the system has been down for the past three days – forcing even those that were charged with petty crimes to remain behind bars.

“It is the third day I’m sleeping in the cell because when you go to pay a fine you are told the system is down. Others were fined Ksh300 for not wearing masks and they are still here because they cannot deposit the fines digitally,” lamented one of those locked in the cells who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“Why can’t they allow us to pay the fines manually? Until when will we keep suffering here? The situation here is very bad, people are sick yet they are not being taken to hospital. We don’t know for how long we will be locked in here until the system resumes,” added another inmate.

Contacted over the matter, the Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Ayub Ali only said he will address the issue with the urgency it deserves.
