CS Matiangi to Issue Citizenry Certificate to Shona Community

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang`i is expected on Wednesday 28th July to issue a certificate of citizenship to the Shona community in Kenya.

This comes as at times Kenya Agreed to recognize the Shona community as part of Kenyans.

Shona arrived in Kenya in 1959.

Kenya obtained its independence in 1963 and by then 16 Shona families were already in the country having originally migrated from Zimbabwe and Zambia to Kenya as British subjects.

Since they were unable to submit proof of their legal ties to their countries of origin as required by legislation governing the registration of births and citizenship, they lost their Zimbabwe and Zambian citizenship.

The existing situation, therefore, made them stateless ad unable to own businesses or work in Kenya.
CS Matiangi`s move might be very advantageous to them.
