Digital billboards to assist in monitoring air pollution in Nairobi

On 7th September launched by the county government in collaboration with UN Environmental Programme digital billboards to monitor air pollution in the city. The digital billboards' colors will change colors depending on the amount of pollution. Any colors other than green and blue are not good. Air pollution can cause serious health issues like asthma, lung cancer, and heart disease.

Other companies are supporting this project in collaboration with UNEP including  IQAir,  Safaricom, Alpha, and Jam Ltd, and Metropolitan Star Lite Ltd.Lawerence Mwangi Assistant Director of Environment of Nairobi mentioned that the technology will not only help the county government to monitor the air pollution but also the congestion in the city. And that this move will also be able to help residents in the city health.

The billboards have been placed in four critical areas in the city with the most traffic Moi Avenue, University Way, Mbagathi Way, and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Unep's program manager Sean Khan has pointed out how this system will assist those with respiratory diseases like asthma. The project was launched on the day the world celebrates the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies.
