Accra Road renamed Kenneth Matiba

The popular street, Accra Road in Nairobi CBD, which serves as a landmark in the downtown has received a new name. The road has now been named after the late Kenneth Matiba. He was a former Cabinet Minister and a known hero for the Second Liberation.

Photos were shared on social media on Wednesday, March 31, showing the initial signage being pulled down and the new one erected. This name was approved in a motion on Monday this week, by the Nairobi County Assembly.

It is a great honor to recognize his efforts as a strong, democratic political leader in Kenya. He pushed for multiparty in the years 1988-1990. In his fight, President Moi ordered his arrest at Kamiti Maximum Prison without having a trial.

There was poor medical care in the prison; which made him suffer a stroke that incapacitated him for the rest of his life. He was also a political mentor and a close family friend to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“He (Matiba) would call us for a game of squash and after that, he would challenge us to get into public service,” President Kenyatta said during Matiba's death.

On July 31, 1990, Uhuru together with other prominent sons challenged the Moi government's dictatorial tendencies - just three weeks after Matiba had been arrested. This time it was successful after a few months, Moi spared Kenyatta and his friends which would be unlikely for any other person.
