Drama as Nairobi MCAs Storm Supreme Court over Parking Space

Led by the speaker Kennedy Ngondi and the House leadership, the MCA’s broke into the parking lot located adjacent to the Supreme Court protesting directives barring them from using the space.

The angry MCAs vowed to hold their Wednesday afternoon session at the lot.

“I have instructed the clerk to pitch the tent here and we will hold our session here today. We have the second reading of the budget appropriation bill and we will have it here,” Ngondi stated.

According to the legislatures, the Apex court had written to the leadership of the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) during the hearing of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) directing that the space which borders the Supreme Court Garden should not be used for parking.

The speaker displayed documents showing that the parking had been gazetted as property of the County Assembly hence directing the Members to start using it immediately.

“From the documents, you can clearly see that the property belongs to Nairobi County Assembly, henceforth the members will be using it for parking,” he added.

In a previous sitting at the Assembly, members led by Dandora Area 2 MCA Silas Matara Ongwae, complained that they take a lot of time looking for parking space before getting into the chambers yet the space was available for use by the members.

He alleged that members had been barred from using the space for security reasons.

Matara suggested that the Judiciary should buy the parking from the Nairobi County Government, and the proceeds used to buy the MCAs some other space to buy their cars.

“We really waste a lot of time looking for parking space before getting into the chambers. How are we a security threat to the Supreme Court? If they want the parking then they should buy it from the county Government of Nairobi and the Members be bought another parking space,” Matara stated.
