EACC Freezes Account of Ksh. 21,000 Salaried City Hall Staff

A 45 year-old Nairobi City County procurement officer in the department of supply chain management at City Hall, Michael Auka Ajwang’, earning KSh 21,000 per month is on the spot because of allegedly being involved in several corruption schemes. The officer is accused of accepting the funds as bribes from vendors.

Since Ajwang's age and the amount of money he has been making have not allowed him to accumulate as many properties as he does, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has requested the High Court to impose a property freeze.

The assets are thought to be the proceeds of crime, and the court in Nairobi has been informed that if transactions on them are not stopped, recovery will be difficult and the investigation will be pointless. Ajwang has been ordered by Justice Daniel Ogembo not to deal with a number of his properties.

The multimillion-dollar properties under examination include three motorcycles and eleven recent purchases of motor vehicles, the oldest of which is a KBV 015M-registered car. Nine pieces of land are dispersed around Nyanza, and one is in Nairobi.

The EACC maintains that Ajwang's five properties in Siaya, three in Kisumu, and one in Nairobi's Utawala Estate are the results of widespread corruption that resulted from the subordinate officer's unfair procurement practices at the Nairobi City County.

Ajwang's wife, Risper Achieng Ojigo has also been involved in the schemes as she was a director of Hydeout Riviera, a 3-star hotel situated along Kisumu-Bondo Road.

An average monthly income of KSh 21,000 for the time period under inquiry, between January 2014 and June 2022, would equal KSh 2,122,232, according to the EACC. The Commission further asserted that it was impossible for Ajwang to have amassed such riches.

The case will be heard on 22nd September, 2022.
