The businessman was badly wounded by the thugs and is now in critical condition at the hospital.

At around 9 a.m. on Monday, Geoffrey Mwangi was returning home from Embu town after shutting his business when he was attacked by five alleged gang members who were driving in a pickup truck.

The group blocked Mwangi’s car and sprayed it with bullets, leaving him seriously hurt.

They left Mwangi unconscious in his car and fled yet a friend who was with him in the car managed to escape unharmed.

Mwangi was taken by ambulance to Embu Referral Hospital with gunshot wounds to his hands and neck.

He was later transferred to Nairobi for specialized medical care after his condition worsened.

Julius Kyumbule, the head of the Embu West sub-county police said that they were pursuing the thugs.

Traders denounced the assault and urged authorities to look into the shooting as insecurity may scare away investors.

Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Embu branch head John Mate also urged the police to step up security in the area

"Everyone is living in fear following the invasion of the region by criminals. Shops have been raided and property looted. The situation is serious and security officers should wake up and do their job," Mate said.
