According to local media, police discovered what they suspect to be explosives during a search of the alleged gunman's home

The country's prime minister Fumio Kishida condemned the attack before Abe`s death, saying: "It is barbaric and malicious and it cannot be tolerated."

"This attack is an act of brutality that happened during the elections - the very foundation of our democracy - and is absolutely unforgivable," Mr. Kishida said.

During a press briefing at Nara Medical University Hospital, doctors reported Mr. Abe had two bullet wounds to his neck around 5cm (1inch) apart, as well as heart damage.

Mr. Abe was claimed to be alert and responsive in the moments following the incident, but his condition rapidly deteriorated.

Doctors reported that by the time the former prime minister was taken for treatment, no vital signs had been discovered, and he needed a blood transfusion.

Further details sourced by this publication have revealed that the late Mr. Abe was giving a speech for a political candidate in Nara at a road junction in Japan when the attack took place.

Eyewitnesses say they observed a man holding a huge rifle and firing twice from behind at Mr. Abe.

Mr. Abe was accompanied by a squad of security officers. However, it appears that the gunman was able to come within a few meters of Mr. Abe despite the lack of any form of check or barrier.

Different leaders across the world have sent their condolences to the family of the Late Abe for losing such a king.
