He believes that the brakes of the truck could have failed, causing the accident.

Four others were seriously injured in the accident, and have been rushed to hospital. Tharaka Nithi County Rescue Team Patron, Alex Mugambi, confirmed the accident.

The accident came a week after at least nine people died following an accident that occurred near St. Mary's Hospital near Gilgil along the Nairobi Nakuru Highway at the Soysambu area.

Kenya Red Cross emergency team and Police were at the scene a few minutes after the accident and took the injured including the matatu driver to the hospital.

Gilgil sub-county police commander John Onditi said two others were injured in the accident that occurred at around 5 am. The commander stated that the matatu was headed for Nairobi from Nakuru while the trailer was headed in the opposite direction.
