The president’s sentiments came a day after an incident that was witnessed recently along forest road in Nairobi yesterday saying that the event was disheartening to watch. In a video that dominated the social media a lady motorist was being harassed by men most of whom were boda-boda riders.

I must at this stage refer to what was referred here, because without a doubt that was a very disheartening thing to see. And its only one of others that have occurred across this country.” the president said.

The president further went to say that he had given orders for a crackdown on all the boda-boda operators in Nairobi and most parts of the country.

Yesterday I did give instructions and I have ordered a crackdown on all boda-boda operators starting here in Nairobi and moving across the country," Kenyatta said.

The president urged the bodaboda operators to protect the rights of women since most of their customers are women and they should therefore protect them.

“So do your bit, kwasababu wateja wenu ni hawa wakina mama. Watakua wateja wenu kwa njia gani ikiwa nyinyi wenyewe mnawakosea heshima vile mmewakosea,” President Kenyatta said.

The president further urged local leaders to identify amongst themselves the evil in the sector.

Speaking on the matter, the president urged political leaders not to politicize the issue saying that the government has a key responsibility of protecting women which it must achieve.

Speaking at the event the president has noted his government has played a major role in protecting women’s rights, strengthening women empowerment and improving their ownership of assets such as land.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.

The event was attended by among other dignitaries Kenya’s first lady, Margaret Kenyatta, and Rwandese first lady, Jannette Kagame, who congratulated Margaret Kenyatta for her Beyond Zero marathon campaigns.

At the same time the president officially unveiled the Margaret Kenyatta Institute for Gender and Social Development at the Kenya School of Government (KSG) as part of this year's International Women’s Day national celebrations.
