The Energy Regulatory Authority, EPRA, will increase the fuel prices by Sh9.90 in its monthly review this month. This raises the price of a litre of petrol in Nairobi to Sh144.62 from Sh134.72.

In Nairobi, a litre of diesel will now cost Sh125, up from Sh115.60.

In Nairobi, kerosene will cost Sh113.44, up from Sh103.54 previously.

In accordance with EU regulations, the new prices include 8% VAT.

Notably, the government has offered a Ksh29.08 subsidy for a litre of super petrol, a Ksh40.24 subsidy for a litre of diesel, and a Ksh26.45 subsidy for a litre of kerosene.

Without the subsidy, the products would have cost Ksh173.70 for super, Ksh165.74 for diesel, and Ksh139.89 for kerosene, respectively. The rise in fuel prices is a result of the international market's rise in barrel prices.

However, the State could offer a partial subsidy similar to last month to help ease the rise in fuel prices amid a push by oil dealers to scrap the State's aid, which has been blamed for the weeks-long fuel shortage.

“Without the subsidy, the prices are likely to jump by up to Sh40 a litre based on the cost of cargos that were shipped this month,” stated a CEO of a top marketer.

The threat of price increases arises as the government seeks solutions to the ongoing fuel shortage.

The fuel shortage has returned to haunt motorists as concerns about the State-backed subsidy continue ahead of the monthly review of pump prices.

CS Juma also issued a warning to OMCs earlier today, requesting that they either comply or leave the Kenyan market.

"Kenya will not tolerate any entity or person causing distress either by creating an artificial problem or stress. Any entity that is not ready, able, or willing to work within the framework of the laws of Kenya is invited to vacate this market promptly," the CS stated,
