Government Bans Sale of Roasted Maize in Kakamega

The Ministry of interior and co-ordinator of the national government issued a ban notice prohibiting Maize roasting, sale of maize, and exporting green Maize from one place to another.

According to the notice, no persons shall sell or roast green maize at the roadside/marketplace or transport green maize by bicycle or motorcycle.

Farmers can sell green maize with permission from the agricultural Officer and Assistant Chief of the area.

No export of white maize unless permitted by the relevant authority.

The notice further indicated that every person should obey this order in the public interest.

However, it is believed that the ban is aimed at cubbing thieves who invade people`s farms to steal maize for selfish gain.
The shocking ban comes at a time the Kenya Bureau of Standards ostracized 27 maize and porridge flour brands after they failed to meet quality standards required for human consumption.

In a statement on Saturday 21st August, KEBS said out of the 27, 12 are Maize brands while 15 are porridge brands.

The maize brands blacklisted include; Budget, Equatorial Ugali Afya, Fahali, Family, and Pembe flour.
