In a recent audit report, the Auditor General declared the institution insolvent, or bankrupt in other words, as it is unable to service Ksh4.5 billion debts.

But speaking during a visit to the Kesses-based University in Uasin Gishu County, Principal Secretary State Department of University Education and Research Amb. Simon Nabukwesi said the situation has been occasioned by a deficit in funding that public institutions of higher learning face.

“We know that funding is in deficit. We know there are huge pending bills like this university has like Ksh5 billion but it is not their making entirely, it is the needs that are too big compared to the capabilities to deal with the requirements,” noted the PS.

Amb. Nabukwesi further noted that the Ministry of Education will be hosting a meeting with public university management aimed at helping find a lasting solution to the financial challenges the institutions face.

“We are consulting to find a collective solution to all the issues so that we put universities on the road to progress,” noted the University Education and Research.

“We have arranged for a series of consultative meetings on matters of funding to deal with the financial requirement of universities,” he added.

Moi University is among the oldest institutions of higher learning in the country and it played a key role in helping the growth of other current universities among them the University of Eldoret, Garissa University Colege, Masinde Muliro University, and Karatina University.
