With the football season finally complete, talks have already turned to the Ballon d'Or award, with a number of candidates emerging during this summer’s Euro 2020 and Copa America competition.
- Lionel Messi
The Argentine striker led his country to win the Copa America tournament the first silverware since 1993. Messi achieved immortality now with his country as he already had with La Liga's side Barcelona and even with the Catalans he displayed some of his very best forms in 2021.
- Jorginho
The much-maligned Italian midfielder is a double European Champion having won the Champions League with Chelsea and the Euro 2020 with Italy.
- Harry Kane
The Tottenham forward took a while to warm up in the tournament but he stepped up in the knock-out stages. Kane led England up to the European Championship final.
- Robert Lewandowski
Lewandowski broke the long-standing record by scoring 41 goals in 29 appearances in the 2020/2021 season but he lost Germany player of the season to Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.
- Giorgio Chiellini
The defender's performance at the Euro 2020 tournament alongside Bonucci helped Italy win the European trophy.
No Defender has won the Ballon d'Or prize since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006.
