How to Prepare Homemade Coleslaw

The only ingredient of coleslaw that never changes is raw cabbage; the variety of cabbage, dressing, and additional ingredients all affect how the dish is made in different ways.

How to Prepare Homemade Coleslaw

Coleslaw is a side dish made of finely shredded raw cabbage, a salad dressing or other condiment, and optional toppings such as onions, pepper, pineapple, carrots, and herbs.

Tips for making coleslaw

Before adding the mayonnaise and salt to the dressing, whisk the apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, sugar, and black pepper in a medium mixing basin as it helps bring the flavors together.

The liquid should have a pourable but not overly watery consistency that falls halfway between buttermilk and ranch dressing.

Storing coleslaw

As long as you don't combine this creamy dressing with any shredded cabbage, you can prepare it up to 3 days in advance. However, it is better to consume it within two days of mixing the dressing with the cabbage and carrots.

1 small green cabbage, finely shredded

3 cups purple cabbage, finely shredded

1 cup carrot finely shredded

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Freshly squeezed lemon juice

⅔ cup full-fat mayonnaise

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

½ teaspoon black pepper

Salt - to taste

Cut off the core and the outside leaves after cutting your cabbage in quarters through the center.

Use a large knife to finely shred each quarter after cutting it in half crosswise, then add the shredded pieces to a big bowl.

In the same bowl, combine the carrot shreds and purple cabbage shreds.

Add the apple cider vinegar, lemon, granulated sugar, and black pepper to a medium bowl then whisk well to combine for a perfect coleslaw dressing.

Add the mayonnaise and mix to combine then season with salt, and taste for acidity.

Add additional salt or apple cider vinegar, if needed.

Pour half of the dressing over the shredded cabbage, mixing well to combine. Add the remaining dressing and mix again.

Transfer the coleslaw to the refrigerator and refrigerate for 30-60 minutes to allow the flavors to set

Serve and enjoy
