Hungary’s Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai to miss Euro 2020 due to groin injury.

Hungary head coach Marco Rossi has revealed that the star Dominik Szoboszlai will miss out on Euro 2020 since he has never fully recovered from a groin injury.

Rossi said that after announcing the 26-man squad that will represent Hungary in the competition.

The RB Leipzig player was injured when he arrived at Bundesliga side where he was signed in January for €20 million. He has been out of the Leipzig’s squad since then until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old midfielder has played 12 matches for Hungary and was named in 30-man provisional squad before being left after failing to prove his fitness.

“He is not in good condition. He is not even in a condition to be sent on as a substitute for a few minutes,…it is really painful for me not to be able to play him,” The Italian coach Rossi told a press conference.

Dominik’s absence is a blow to the team who are placed in group F alongside France, Germany and Portugal. He was instrumental in the qualification stage where they qualified through play-offs after edging out Iceland, where he scored a winning goal.

Hungary will play title holders Portugal (June 15) and World Champions France (June 19) in Budapest before meeting Germany (June 23) in Munich.

Szoboszlai joined Leipzig on January 2021 from RB Salzburg (2018-2021),where he signed a four-year contract which ends in the year 2025.

During his time in Salzburg, where he played 151 matches, He received the of the season award for 2019/20 after scoring 9 goals and 14 assists in 27 league matches.

His style of play include an eye-catching flair for free-kicks, long-range goals, and defence-splitting assists.

RB Leipzig extended his contract for a year to 2026 and securing him from moving out after AC Milan and Real Madrid offered to sign him.

Szoboszlai showed his disappointment after being left out respected the decision.

“It is difficult to be cut from the squad, but this was the only responsible decision,” he said.

“The most important is that the national team perform well at the Euros, and for me personally, to get fully fit again for September,”

Rossi’s final 26-man squad also includes Szoboszlai’s RB Leipzig teammates Peter Gulacsi and Willi Orban.

Hungary will play Euro 2020 warm-up friendlies against Cyprus on Friday and Ireland next Tuesday.
