This is after locals in the area complained of a criminal gang that has been operating in the informal settlement – under the protection of the police.

During a meeting in which the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Stephen Kihara and County Police Commander Ayub Ali attended, the locals claimed that police offers usually visit the illegal business areas to collect cash and in return protect the criminals.

“There is a car that moves around this area full of police officers. Hoping from one building to another collecting money from those selling illicit alcohol, and other banned substances,” a Langas local said during the security meeting.

Kapeseret Sub County Commissioner David Satia now says they have officially started investigating claims from the locals.

“The locals said openly during the meeting with the county commissioner that some officers were collecting money for protection. They gave out names and we’re working on investigating the named officers,” Satia said.

He also noted that during the meeting, locals revealed the identity of people being involved in illegal businesses among them selling illegal brews, bhang, and other banned substances.

The Sub County Commissioner said the probe will also extend to building owners who will be found allowing illegal businesses to operate under their watch.

“We’ve started real work on the ground and landlords who entertain people engaging in illegal business will also be dealt with accordingly,” Satia warned.

Langas has been witnessing a rise in criminal activities, most of which are related to illegal substances, a trend that prompted the Uasin Gishu County Security team to hold a public session with locals in a bid to find a lasting solution.
