According to a supplementary budget filed in Parliament on Tuesday, the funds routed to the commission will be used to procure election material, such as voting boxes, and to promote mass voter registration which is set to expire on Friday 4th.

In August 2021, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati recommended that the National Treasury raise the budgetary allocation that will be set aside for the commission to conduct the General Election.

According to Chebukati, the IEBC needed a minimum of Ksh.40.9 billion to organize the 2022 elections but the treasury only allocated Ksh.26.34 billion leaving a shortfall of Ksh.14.57 billion.

Other notable winners from the budget allocations, in addition to IEBC, are Kenya Airways and petroleum companies.

KQ will be expecting an additional Ksh26.56 million for reshaping while the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining has been handed Ksh24.73 billion in order to stabilize the fuel prices.

According to treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani, the funds were channeled to prioritize spending areas before the end of the financial year 2021/2022.

"There is increased demand for additional priority expenditure which poses a challenge to the implementation of the budget," Ukur Yatani stated.

The additional budget will cover unpaid bills, pay adjustments, CBC infrastructure expansion, post-COVID-19 initiatives, and drought relief.
