India backs WHO’S call on China to provide data on Covid-19 roots

The Indian government has explicitly said it supports the World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’s promise that collaborative research in the future will encompass relevant sharing of needed data in the wake of Chinese lag in the sharing of information touching on the genesis of Covid-19.

This hard stance comes after accusations of complacency regarding China by Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus but in recent days he has hardened the tone regarding allegations of Chinese refusal to share data on the origins of Covid-19.

He said that international researchers were finding it hard to get the information needed in Wuhan and promising that future collaborative studies have to encompass relevant sharing of information.

Researchers found that reports of laboratory leaks do not hold much water although more research is needed with more seasoned researchers.

According to India’s Minister of External Affairs Arindam Bagchi, the data can be an important first step towards knowing the genesis of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The report documents four important routes concerning the pandemic but a further study is needed in the region to glean important conclusions.

The WHO Director-General is concerned with the delays in China concerning getting raw data by the researchers on the ground.

Mr. Bagchi further said that India lends its hand to the efforts by the stakeholders in calling for the next phase of investigations on the WHO report encompassing the conceptualization of initial cases on the same as well as the different categories of the pandemic.

India’s sentiments follow on the heels of 14 other countries including the United States and Japan which have equally raised concerns concerning the documented report on the tussle between the World Health Organization (WHO) and China where it was found that most of the researchers could not easily access the original data as well as the relevant samples.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report recently released, it was evident that the transmission from bats to other animals then to human beings was the least likely way the pandemic began.

Other countries like United States, Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, and Israel noted that they offer full support to WHO in their efforts to end the pandemic especially by understanding its genesis.

However, they also noted their dissatisfaction with the delay in providing the much-needed data and eventually denied access to the original information.

To this end, China has been widely criticized for its alleged role in the spread of Covid-19 which has infected close to 128 million people globally with more than 2.8 million people dead.
