Interior CS Declares August 29 As A Public Holiday in the Following Regions

The Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i has declared a public holiday, August 29, in the areas where elections are set to be held after they had been initially postponed.

Matiang'i clarified that the brief break will allow locals in particular places to exercise their right to democracy. He also requested employers to set free their employees for the excercise ahead.

"Employers around the country are requested to release their employees who are registered voters in the listed electoral areas to enable them to vote," Matiang'i stated.

"In accordance with the Constitution of Kenya (Articles 101 (1), 177 (1) (a) and 180 (1) and the Public Holidays Act (Sections 2(4) and 3), Monday, August 29 2022 has been declared a public holiday in the listed electoral areas," Interior CS stated.

The following areas will have the elctions conducted on Monday, August 29:

  1. Mombasa county.
  2. Kakamega county.
  3. Kacheliba.
  4. Kitui Rural.
  5. Pokot South.
  6. Rongai constituencies.
  7. Kwa Njenga Ward  in Embakasi South.
  8. Nyaki West Ward in Imenti North.

Following a mistake in the printing of ballot papers, the IEBC postponed the polls in the eight areas on August 9.

Embakasi East Returning Officer Daniel Musyoka's passing and other related issues also led to the electoral authority delaying the elections from August 23 to August 29.

After consulting and meeting with various candidates from the regions, IEBC decided on August 29 as the date.
