Investigation Launched After Student Gets Beaten For Failing To Attain 400 Marks

The Ministry of Education has recently opened an investigation into an incident in which teachers allegedly brutally reprimanded a Class 8 student at Nyamninia Primary School in Yala, Siaya County, for failing to get 400 marks.

On Friday, Dr. Julius Jwan, the principal secretary for education, said that Siaya County education officials had visited the school to look into the situation.

“A video has been going round of a learner being punished by teachers for not attaining 400 marks. It's so bad…we have narrowed down and identified the school, investigations are ongoing,” the Education Principal Secretary said speaking during the commissioning of the new Mtihani House in South C.

The incident sparked public outrage as a video of a boy crying while displaying the marks from the punishment he said two teachers had laid out on him.

The schoolboy claimed he was forced to leave the school after the punishment got intolerable, claiming he gave it his all but was no longer able to endure it.

“Nimejaribu kuvumilia lakini hata ukivumilia ndio wanazidi kukuchapa. Nimevumilia 11 years in that school na mimi sasa nimechoka. Afadhali sasa hata ujiue kuliko kufikiria vitu mingi,” the boy said in the undated video.
