In a statement, the authority indicated that it had deployed investigators from its Nairobi headquarters to beef up their Meru Rapid Investigations counterparts who launched their investigations on Wednesday.

IPOA also warned members of the public of taking matters into their own hands by attacking the police and damaging property.

"Once investigations are concluded, the authority will make recommendations, including prosecution if criminal culpability is established on the part of the police officers involved," reads an excerpt of the statement.

The two brothers, Benson Njiru Ndwiga,22, and Emmanuel Mutura Ndwiga,19, were allegedly in police custody when they met their death.

The family stated that the duo had been arrested for contravening curfew orders set by the government.

Police from Manyatta Police station, however, reported the duo was not in their custody.
