JOBS: Chief Commercial Officer at Nation Media Group

Job purpose

The Chief Commercial Officer reports to the Group CEO and is responsible for meeting customer needs, and accelerating growth including delivery of ambitious revenue targets. The CCO oversees all commercial teams, including sales, marketing, production, customer care, and circulation. The role drives the overall commercial strategy. At its core is our transformation to digital products, digital content, digital brands, and digital-native customers, while sustaining existing revenue streams.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the customer champion at all levels of the company;
  • Create and execute commercial strategies aimed at accelerating growth;
  • Drive customer acquisition through marketing, including the development of offers and campaigns to drive traffic and conversions;
  • Increase retention by reducing churn rates to “best in class” levels;
  • Deploy modern techniques to scope the market and lead change with a focus on the constantly evolving customer;
  • Define business plans using data to meet current and future needs of content and advertising customers;
  • Undertake research on the data and generate value from insights derived;
  • Strong teamwork particularly with Chief Technology and Innovation Officer (CTIO) and Group Editorial Director (GED);
  • Grow current and additional market in order to achieve growth in market share and sales revenue at a minimum cost;
  • Business Development - Focus on creating partnerships that increase traffic and sales;
  • Market Development – Work collaboratively with the Chief Technology & Innovation Officer, to create long-term (1+ year) opportunities through new markets & products.
  • Keep abreast of competitor developments;
  • Customer Engagement and support - Responsible for maintaining knowledge of digital platforms, policies, and known issues and solutions, assisting customers with problems and questions, tracking customer interactions to report on trends and satisfaction levels;
  • Oversee and ensure the quality, efficiency, and on-time delivery of all products that reach customers, both digitally and offline;
  • Develop advertising and content sales (including circulation) strategies;
  • Deliver the annual revenue budgets.

Attributes & Skills

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (additional qualification will be an added advantage)
  • Have a minimum of 10 years of experience managing commercial, sales, and marketing teams
  • Demonstrate commercial acumen, business knowledge, understanding of a variety of commercial practices, and familiarity with contemporary tech-led organizations
  • Lead with strategic thinking and a growth mindset
  • Show digital knowhow including customer data platforms and data management platforms
  • Demonstrate an ability to build and lead a dynamic culture of innovation and learning
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills to persuasively sell ideas
  • Interpret research data for threats and opportunities
  • Grow people and talent and achieve results through others
  • Embrace a dynamic, challenging, and target-driven environment
  • Exemplify courage to try out new methods and reach for the unknown
  • Embody trust, integrity, sound judgment and a collaborative nature
  • Experience in news media is a plus but not a must-have.
