KATIBA Institute Challenges Uhuru`s Decision on Judges Appointment

Katiba institute moved to court on Friday, June 4th, morning to challenge President Uhuru Kenyatta`s decision on appointing 34 new judges and dropping  6 Judges in a move that was termed as cold war-related to the ruling of Building Bridges Initiative as Null, void, and unconstitutional.

According to the Katiba Institute, it stated that cherry-picking undermines the judiciary and its independence.

However, the petition filed on Friday morning, just a day after the President gazetted the appointments.

The institute is now seeking to have the appointments revoked.

Katiba Institute, a lobby group, has sought to have President Kenyatta compelled to appoint all 40 judges who were recommended by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

According to President Kenyatta's Gazette notice dated Thursday 3rd six nominees were rejected despite their approval by the Judicial Service Commission.

Among the Judges who were rejected by President Uhuru Kenyatta were: George Odunga, Joel Ngugi,  Weldon Korir, Aggrey Muchelule, Cheruiyot Judith Omange, and Evans Makori.
