Kenya &Hungary Signs Bilateral Agreements

Shortly after President Uhuru Kenyatta and his visiting Hungarian counterpart János der led their respective delegations in bilateral talks, the agreements were inked at the State House in Nairobi.

The health pact includes human resource capacity building, information sharing, and illness prevention, like Covid-19.

The education deal would increase the number of Kenyans receiving Hungarian government scholarships from 100 to 200 per year, while the water accord will address wastewater management and other associated issues.

The two countries had recently signed a memorandum of understanding on diplomatic training and information sharing, under which they will engage in diplomat training.

President Kenyatta praised Hungary as one of Kenya's strongest bilateral allies in Europe during a joint press conference shortly after witnessing the signing of the accords, noting that Hungary was the sixth foreign country to establish diplomatic relations with Kenya in 1964.

President Kenyatta announced Kenya's plan to establish a diplomatic mission in Budapest "at the earliest opportunity" to solidify the strong bilateral connections forged over the previous five decades and to meet the country's strategic objective to have a stronger presence in Central and Eastern Europe.

He expressed gratitude to his Hungarian counterpart for his government's decision to double the number of scholarships available to Kenyan students, stating that the move will strengthen bilateral connections between the two countries.

“I am glad that your administration has offered to double Hungarian Government Scholarships given to Kenyan Students annually from the current 100 to 200 opportunities.

“We thank you and your administration for the kind gesture which will not only help strengthen our people-to-people collaboration but also enhance our two countries' cooperation within the wider Kenya-European Union partnership,” President Kenyatta said.
