KVDA Managing Director Sammy Naporos says currently, they are constructing 11 boreholes in several parts of Turkana and Samburu counties as part of mitigation to drought and hunger that has hit the region.

The project, Naporos says, costs over Ksh100 million.

“Within the next two months, the boreholes will be ready,” the MD said in an interview at his office in Eldoret town.

Water is a key commodity especially for the pastoralists who depend on it for themselves and their livestock.

The current drought situation has seen a number of key water pans in the area dry up, leading to a lack of food for both locals and their livestock.

KVDA has also rolled out the distribution of relief food to the affected locals in parts of Turkana, Baringo, and Samburu counties, among others.

“For now, the projects we’re implementing in the area is to give relief food to the affected areas like Turkana North and Samburu North,” noted Naporos.

The authority also has a number of irrigation schemes targeted at helping locals get food, but the drought situation has led to a drop in water levels.

KVDA boss is, however, optimistic that the irrigation projects will soon pick up as some depend on water that flows in from the Cherangany Hills.
