Lack of Road signage Blamed for Gem Malanga Fatal Accident

Following the fatal accident that involved a trailer ferrying petrol at Malanga in Gem Constituency that left 13 people dead on Saturday 17th Night, Gem constituency Member of Parliament Elisha Odhiambo blamed Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, The Kenya National and highways Authority {KeNHA} and the Siaya County Governor Cornel Rasanga for not ensuring that road signages are placed on the road and are well labeled.

According to MP Elisha, there's no way KeNHA can construct a road without any signage. He also stated that the accident could have been avoided.

On the other hand, Mr. Elisha blamed the country`s Emergency team for the late response.

He tried to reach the county governor Cornel Rasanga and the county secretary but they never picked his calls. It`s only the assistant chief who picked his calls.

However, According to Gem OCPD Mosera Chacha, stated that the fire broke out when one person opened the tanker compartment to allow them to siphon petrol faster before the arrival of the police.

"The members of the public took advantage and went to siphon the petrol as one compartment of the tanker was open. Another resident realising the other compartment was closed and delaying them, opened it to enable them to siphon very fast before the police could arrive in the process it caused a spark and blew up."
