A mental assessment report conducted on former Governor Mike Sonko has declared him fit to stand trial.

The report revealed that his health condition does not bar him from attending and following proceedings in court.

The assessment was ordered by Nairobi Magistrate Peter Ouko after Sonko's lawyers had initially told the court that the ex-county boss was unfit to stand trial owing to his bipolar condition.

The court revealed on Monday, March 22 that the report dated Thursday, March 11 declared Sonko's mental health and speech as normal.

The report added that although Sonko is receiving treatment for a bipolar condition, it was established that it has not blocked him from carrying out his daily duties.

“With that finding, I do believe that the activities entail attending court process, I, therefore, reconfirm the hearing dates given which starts on 29 this month,” the court ruled.

Last week, the prosecution dismissed an application to have a Ksh.10 million extortion case against Sonko adjourned on claims the ex-city boss was not fit to stand trial.

Sonko had a series of cases against him thrown out on Friday, March 19 as the arrests by the arrest by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) and the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai did not accord him constitutional requirements.
