A road accident involving a bus and a lorry on the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu highway killed eight people and injured several more on Saturday.

According to the police investigation, the accident occurred when the bus collided with a lorry transporting sand to Nairobi.

The Maai Mahiu morning collision on Saturday, May 21, featured a bus bound for Kisii and a truck heading to Nairobi from Narok.

According to a police source who was present at the time of the accident and declined to be identified, the bus driver fell asleep at the wheel, losing control of the vehicle and crashing into the oncoming lorry.

As police rushed in to clean the scene of the 2 a.m. accident, traffic backed up on the busy Mai Mahiu-Narok route.

The injured were sent to Naivasha Level 4 Hospital for treatment, while the deceased were taken to the mortuary at the same hospital. Four other passengers were seriously injured and were said to be in a coma.

The eight, four men and four women, perished on the spot, according to Nakuru traffic base police chief Beatrice Kuragui were reportedly on their way to Kisii for burial.

According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), more than 1,300 individuals have died in road accidents since January 2022.
