Makueni county was on Monday (yesterday) evening thrown into mourning after losing its medical expert following the Taita Taveta air crash.

Dr. Athman Lugogo attached to Makueni Referral Hospital died alongside Ms. Esther Kamande, a Kenya Aviation Authority (KAA) instructor.

This is after their chopper crashed at Vuria Hill in Taita Taveta county. The aircraft was en route to Mombasa from the Wilson Airport in Nairobi county.

At the time of the incident, the chopper, a C172 Caravan Reg No. 5Y CFE had only two occupants.

Makueni Health executive Dr. Andrew Mulwa recalled the late medic as an industrious person whose services will be dearly missed.

"His contribution to the health of the people of Makueni will be dearly missed," stated Dr. Mulwa, while at the same time passing condolences to the bereaved families following the tragedy.

The accident scene has since been secured, with identity tags belonging to the medic and the flight instructor already recovered from the scene.

The tragedy only occurred a day after a chopper reportedly belonging to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga nearly crashed moments after dropping Raila in Gem.

There were no fatalities reported, with the pilot only suffering minor injuries.
